The outer layer of the procuticle of the pupa, that forms before the pupal molt. It is composed of chitin and other hardening substances, which gives it a darker pigmentation and denser structure than the endocuticle. This layer is only found in pupa. (Fristrom and Fristrom, 1993, Snodgrass, 1935)
